We made it to Broadway baby!

In the first week of August 2023, in a brand spanking new theatre in Sydney, Voices of Women got the key to the red stage door and let themselves run wild at King’s Cross Theatre… on Broadway!

The live show, Embellishment, directed by Lliane Clarke and supported by Bakehouse Theatre Company and the Carla Zampatti Foundation, was a collage of stories collected from workshops around NSW (hey Wagga, Dubbo, Macksvillie and Nowra!) and the recent Voices of Women story competition.

Featuring eleven stories and performed by an ensemble of actors and musicians, the live show also featured new music composed especially for the project by Elizabeth Jigalin. We were honoured to feature Wiradjuri elder Aunty Cheryl Penrith OAM in Embellishment, who travelled from Wagga Wagga to share her story and message of ‘Wandira’, stand strong in your own light, as part of the performance. The Opening Night saw a beautiful Welcome to Gadigal Country by Joanne Selfe Cadi Nura.

A new collaboration with KXT, Embellishment was a night of storytelling, music and women coming together from across the country to celebrate diverse women’s voices. The performances were developed and rehearsed in The Vault at KXT as part of a residency.

Across a limited season of four nights, the Opening Night was packed with people from all over Sydney, from all backgrounds and walks of life. We are still recovering from the post-adrenalin rush of live performance, and elated at the response of the community to our first live performance at this wonderful new independent venue in Sydney.
