What a challenge the last eighteen months have been globally, and what better way to navigate that unprecedented journey that via the unknown flow of creativity. At the end of February 2020, I had just wrapped a feature film, and was preparing to wait out the long post production process. Little did anyone know, that within two weeks, the city that never sleeps would be shut down.
Fortunately, being an introvert, the call to isolate, brought a quiet breath, and a creative deep dive into art, studies, and post production on several short film projects that had been begging for my attention.
Mid year, out of the blue, an invitation to meet with Lliane Clarke, the Artistic Director of Voices of Women came. Curiosity about a film project, encapsulating women’s stories from the USA and Australia in a filmic medium, captured my heart and creative spirit – challenge accepted. What a challenge is proved, and a beautiful challenge at that. How does one create twelve short films, when a global pandemic prevents contact.
Through multiple conversations; logistical, technical, creative, and through coming together of extraordinarily willing professionals; cinematographers Jerry Aquino, Rebeca Duran, Claire Hawley, Dan T. Hall, Phillip Paluso, editors, colourists, sound recordists, drivers, epidimiologists, designers, composers, family, friends, and more, Voices of Women – Entanglement was in the can, and ready to be born.
Two years in the making, blood, sweat, tears, and laughter. Directing via Zoom – NYC to Indiana, minimising crew numbers, directing behind masks, slathering sanitiser, minimising shoot times to a tiny 3-5 hours per film, no sleep to ensure every element of the shoot was ready to go, and every person involved knew every single detail of ever changing protocols were just some of the hurdles, long jumps, pole vaults we endured, and navigated like the Creative Olympics we trained, stumbled and the blocks, and negotiated like champions.
The journey has not been easy, but I could not be more proud of these twelve individual short films, not to mention the final sixty minute product. Voices of Women – Entanglement is an epic feat of sharing from the heart and soul, digging deep into the blue print and cell memory of the goddess journey of loss, laughter, hiding, suppression, boldness, courage, rawness, hilarity, and heroics of women.
The power, strength and tenacity is so thrilling to be a part of, and beyond exciting to share. I cannot wait for everyone to experience the epic adventure of Voices of Women – Entanglement.
With love, kindness, and respect. Kaye Tuckerman
