ABOUT THE STORIES

Voices of Women encouraged and supported First Nations and diverse female-identifying storytellers across Australia and the world to create their story through community workshops, grassroots regional tours and an open international call out. We travelled across country to Wiradjuri Country in Wagga Wagga, Yuin Country in Nowra, Gumbaynggir Country in Macksville and Bowraville and the lands of the Tubba-Gah main Wiradjuri people in Dubbo.

The program invited all women to come forward with their story and also a story – it might be about them and it might be about someone else. Many women have not been encouraged to speak, or even write, about what has happened to them and to release their inner voice. Many have been asked to be silent, to not speak, both passively and also violently, or told that they have nothing worth saying – again both passively and also violently,
in their domestic or their political life.

This program works with both established writers and non established writers together, to allow that story to come alive into the public realm.

It’s genuinely important to share stories like this so we can all see ourselves reflected, be reassured that we are not alone, that another’s experience is also ours and that it’s okay to feel that, to be angry or upset or confused about it. And to look inside others experiences and understand where they are coming from, be inspired by them, and emerge stronger.
