The 2020 Adventure is called CLEARWAY: create the space. It has an open theme – all topics are considered. CLEARWAY refers to – ‘no stopping’ – ‘clear the way for creativity’. Our aim is to celebrate all voices including marginalised women in this adventure. Writers are encouraged to write for the performance space and pitch their tones accordingly. Choose from three scenarios and interpret them as wildly and playfully as you like:

Voice 1: Write for a balcony or large verandah or from the middle of a large room: a voice that could be festive or declamatory, loud, brutal, unafraid or ecstatic.

Voice 2: Write for a stairway or corridor or doorway: a voice that is travelling, rhythmic, filled with the joy of expectation or doubt, of foreboding, uncertainty or light of heart.

Voice 3: Write for a small space underneath the stairs or a small circle, a private voice that is loving or lonely, secretive or afraid, whispered gently or kissed.

Email your story as a pdf attachment double spaced, with the subject line YOUR NAME + CLEARWAY ENTRY + VOICE 1 or 2 or 3 to monologue@optusnet.com.au. Your email must be the same as the one you have used to pay your entry.

Stories must be the original work of the author and should not have been published before and be 1,000 words maximum and no longer than three minutes spoken.

Your submitted story must be in the first person and be spoken in a woman’s voice.

All final writers submissions selected will receive $100.00. Some edits may be required for the writers to take on board during the assessment and actors workshops. Every attempt will be made to liaise with the writer during the performance rehearsals.

Selected stories will be performed live by trained actors at Articulate Project Space in March 2020, Lithgow Tin Sheds in April 2020, at Mudgee Writers and Readers Festival and at West Words Outback Writers in Dubbo in September 2020. The performances will be filmed and writers will have access to the footage.

Submission of the story gives permission for the piece to be performed in these and others as developed in ticketed events during 2020.

The stories will be published online on this website and the selected works on Verity La creative journal.

The stories may be collected into a printed anthology and sold at the events. This will be subject to a separate agreement with writers selected.

Stories will remain the copyright of the author.

The judges’ decisions are final. No correspondence will be entered into.
