The Embellishment Storytelling Workshop in Macksville on beautiful Gumbaynggirr Country was a perfect opportunity to ignite creativity and make and tell short stories. The three day workshop was full of connections, word play, performance, and lots of laughter – connecting everyone to each other and to their creative side.
We thank all the cultural and creative artists for their contributions – in particular First Nations community members Penny Stadhams, Rebecca Stadhams, Michele Donovan and Cheryl Donovan.
We also visited the stunning mural at mural at Bowraville HealthOne facility. The mural depicts stories from the past, land animals, women and bush medicine.
Thank you to local visual artist Yaara Straede and Penny Stadhams and Rebecca Stadhams for showing us the mural and sharing their knowledge about it.
The workshop participants developed new stories and shared their own stories alongside Voices of Women Community Facilitator Di Bird, Composer in Residence Elizabeth Jigalin, Shopfront Arts Collaboration Actor Lucy Heffernan and Voices of Women Artistic Director Lliane Clarke.
Participants learnt how to craft a story in a safe and creative environment, joined a story circle to begin and get to know other creatives, had fun with improvisation, word games and story play and heard their story read by an actor and worked with them on it and podcast the story online.
It was a huge honour to work with our community partners ShoreTrack and Jaanymili Bawrrungga.
